Background of the Study
The discovery of skeletal remains in abandoned buildings presents unique forensic challenges, blending elements of urban decay with clandestine criminal activity. In Okitipupa Local Government Area, Ondo State, forensic anthropology is utilized to identify such remains through comprehensive skeletal analysis, contextual evidence collection, and advanced imaging techniques (Oluwase, 2023). Urban environments complicate the recovery process due to factors such as environmental pollutants and structural deterioration, which may alter the preservation state of remains (Ajibola, 2024). This study explores how forensic methodologies are adapted to address these challenges, focusing on the integration of traditional osteological methods with emerging technological innovations. By analyzing case studies from abandoned urban settings, the research aims to develop standardized protocols that ensure reliable identification while accommodating the unique constraints imposed by deteriorated urban infrastructures (Bamidele, 2025). The study underscores the importance of updating forensic practices to reflect urban-specific conditions, thereby enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of victim identification in complex scenarios.

Statement of the Problem
In Okitipupa, the identification of skeletal remains from abandoned buildings is often compromised by urban decay, contamination, and inadequate recovery protocols (Omobolanle, 2023). The absence of tailored forensic procedures for urban environments leads to delays and potential misidentifications, adversely affecting legal proceedings. This study aims to evaluate existing forensic practices and pinpoint the challenges that hinder accurate identification in these contexts, proposing targeted improvements to overcome these limitations (Akinbode, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate forensic techniques used in urban skeletal recoveries.

  2. To identify urban-specific challenges in forensic identification.

  3. To propose standardized protocols adapted for abandoned building environments.

Research Questions:

  1. What forensic methods are applied in urban skeletal identification?

  2. How does urban decay affect the preservation of skeletal remains?

  3. What procedural modifications can enhance forensic outcomes in abandoned buildings?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: Integration of advanced imaging techniques improves identification in urban settings.

  2. H₂: Urban contaminants significantly affect skeletal preservation.

  3. H₃: Tailored forensic protocols enhance identification accuracy in abandoned environments.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the forensic challenges unique to urban decay scenarios, offering improved protocols for skeletal identification in abandoned buildings. The findings will support more accurate legal investigations and contribute to urban forensic science advancements (Taiye, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to forensic anthropology practices in identifying skeletal remains in abandoned buildings in Okitipupa Local Government Area, focusing exclusively on urban decay and environmental contamination.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Abandoned Buildings: Structures no longer in use that often serve as sites for clandestine activities.

  2. Urban Decay: The process of deterioration in city structures and environments.

  3. Environmental Contaminants: Substances present in urban areas that may alter the condition of remains.
